Batticaloa Fort


Fort of Batticaloa

          This fort was initially built by the Portuguese in the year 1628. It has a structure of Four bastions and is surrounded by the Batticaloa lagoon on two sides, and the other two sides are protected by a canal. The Fort was captured by the Dutch on the 18th of May 1638 and after the British overthrew the dutch, the British occupied the Fort from 1745. Currently, the Fort houses several local administrative departments of the Si Lankan Government.
