This building which is found in the center of Cinnamon Gardens was built as a national monument to commemorate the Independence of Sri Lanka from the British rule. The Design for this monument was the “Magul Maduwa” or the royal court of the King of Kandy. The building was built at the location at which the Formal ceremony for the independence of Sri Lanka took place.

The date on which this monument was built was on the 4th of February 1948. The Monument has many symbols engraved on it which symbolize Sri Lanka’s Rich History and Political Freedom. At the entrance of the monument you can find a statue of Sri Lanka’s First Prime minister, D.S.Senanayake surrounded by four stone Lions.
