The Green Mountain Town
Ella is a beautiful village up in the hills of Sri Lanka; situated in the Badulla district of the Uva Province, it is approximately 200 Kilometers east of Colombo and is situated at an elevation of 3415 ft (1040m) above sea level. Ella being a small village at first glance seems like the type of place in which to spend a couple of days, but if you are willing to travel out of town, you will find plenty of things to do to keep you occupied.
The Climate in Ella is another major reason why travelers love spending time there, Hot during the day and nice and cool at night. Travellers also fall in love with its surroundings, the lovely sleepy hill town in the middle of a beautiful green countryside offers spectacular views which allows you to relax and become very comfortable; don't be too laid- back though, definitely make time for the easy-going walks through tea plantations and temples. On a clear day, you can even see the glow from the lighthouses along the southern coast of Sri Lanka. Fancy hiking the peaks that are dotted around Ella, then make sure you take sun protection and lots of water.
It is Located in the Colombo – Badulla road and can be reached by the Colombo Badulla Railway line and the A16 highway ( Beragala – Hali Ela).Ella’s railway station was opened in July 1918. Though the Station has only one platform all trains running the main rail line stop at the station. Ella is 271.03km from the capital of Sri Lanka.
Coming back to the scenery, if you want to see the true beauty of Sri Lanka we advise you to take the train from Nuwara Eliya to Ella.It is also advised that you take the 2nd class on the train and not the 1st class, the reason being in the 2nd class the windows and doors are open meaning, many photography opportunities. The Nuwara Eliya to Ella train route is regarded as one of the most spectacular rail journeys in the world, the journey is told to make you feel as if you are “literally taking a train in the clouds” by many journalists and travelers.
You are bound to build a huge hiking inspired appetite, don't despair as Ella offers some of Sri Lanka’s best home cooked food. Music, Beers, Cocktails and detox smoothies you name it Ella has it all, also if you're not in the mood for Sri Lankan food there are always restaurants which has super fresh pizza and pasta and so much more.It is highly recommended that you try out Cafe chill, Jade garden, Matey hut and Ak Ristoro for delicious meals.
