Ravana's Cave

Cave of the Demon King

Located near Bandarawela, 2km from Ella town lies Ravana Cave. It is something directly out of legend; Story tells that is was the place King Ravana held Princess Sita after Kidnapping her. The cave is quite small compared to other similar locations, measuring at 50ft Wide, 150 ft long and 60 ft High.

According to Ramayana, Ravana, the antagonistic Ruler of Sri Lanka, Kidnaps Sita, the Wife of Lord Rama. Ravana is said to be the Demon King and the Villan of the “religious Epic’ Ramayana.It is said that Lord Rama Freed Sita with the help of Lord Hanuman, Legend tells of how Lord Hanuman set fire to the Entire Kingdom in the Battle which Ensured.

The Climb

You will be greeted by a paved road at the start of the climb, this road leads to a temple where regular praying can be heard. The cave lies 1370 m above sea level and is definitely a strenuous climb. The Climb can be scary at times with open surroundings with no handrails in some parts, but this climb is guranteed to give you a perfect view of the surrounding Landscape. The Climb will take about 2 hours.

You can find the “Nil Diya Pokuna” inside the cave.

Please note:

  • You need to be physically fit because this is quite a strenuous climb.
  • It is advisable to bring along insect repellent.
  • Wear clothing which covers your arms and legs due to thorns and branches which can hurt you.
  • It is also advisable to take a raincoat or an umbrella.
  • You will need a flash for taking pictures inside the Cave.
