Located in between Hambantota and Polonnaruwa and 182km away from Colombo stands one of Sri Lanka’s most famous national parks. Minneriya National Park has 8890 hectares filled with Flora and Fauna for you to enjoy. The Closest city to the national park is Polonnaruwa. The area was designated as a national park on the 12th of August 1997, having been originally declared as a wildlife sanctuary in 1938.
The Focal point of the Minneriya National Park is the Minneriya Rainwater Reservoir. The main specialty of this national park is the Famous “Gathering” of elephants. It is the worlds largest known meeting place of wild Asian elephants in the world. This spectacle happens during the months August to September. Over 160 Species of Birds, 25 species of reptiles and 24 species of mammals have been recorded at Minneriya National Park. In addition to them, you can also many different species of butterflies, fish, and amphibians.
